PE & Sport
At the LEO Academy Trust, we recognise the importance and impact of high quality physical education and school sport and are committed to making sport more accessible to all pupils within the trust. We aim for all children to live a healthy and fulfilling lifestyle by developing their self-motivation to take part in physical activities. All KS1 & KS2 pupils receive a minimum of two PE sessions every week. One session is taught using Create Development's ‘real PE’ scheme which focuses on developing the whole child using a unique, child-centred approach. Through this, children develop physical literacy, emotional resilience and thinking skills to help them achieve in PE, sport and life. This market-leading approach to teaching and learning in PE is fully aligned to the National Curriculum objectives and Ofsted requirements and focuses on the development of agility, balance and coordination as well as healthy competition and cooperative learning.
The second session is led by a qualified sports coach using the Merton PE scheme, ‘real gym’, ‘real dance’ and ‘real foundations’. The Merton PE Scheme develops children’s understanding of a range of competitive sports, including hockey, athletics, football and tag rugby. This framework provides a structured and progressive approach to PE and every lesson is linked to a ‘real PE’ learning focus. All PE lessons are active and engaging, thus encouraging children to develop a lifelong love of physical activity and sport. Additionally to this, all pupils receive a term of swimming lessons at a local swimming centre in years 3, 4 and 5. If required, pupils will receive booster sessions in year 6 to offer them further time and support to reach the national swimming attainment target of swimming confidently and proficiently for a minimum of 25 metres.
We are dedicated to providing as many learning experiences as possible for our pupils and teachers. During the last academic year, we worked collaboratively with the following companies to further supplement our PE curriculum with incredible learning opportunities: Surrey Cricket and Chance to Shine program; martial arts lessons with Progressive Arts; tennis lessons with the Sutton Tennis Academy and weekly yoga lessons with professional instructors.

Extra Curricular Clubs and Activities
Our extensive, broad extra curricular programme involves up to 50 extra-curricular clubs every week in each school, please see Cheam Common Junior Academy Extra curricular 2020 clubs list as an example. These clubs include professional golf coaching at Horton Park Golf Club, football coaching with JDFS football school, archery, rugby, dance and gymnastics classes. We are always looking to add to our range of sporting provision and are committed to making sport as inclusive as possible, giving every child the opportunity to find the right sport for them. All of our clubs that are facilitated by LEO sports instructors and teachers are free of charge to all pupils. We reserve spaces for our Pupil Premium students and have clubs dedicated to SEND pupils such as our Healthy Lions Club and inclusive clubs such as sitting-volleyball and kurling. Our hugely successful links with Surrey Cricket has also seen the progress of our LEO Allstars and Dynamos cricket programs, available to our Pupil Premium pupils.
As well as providing sporting opportunities for all, we also recognise the importance of competition in school sport. We encourage all LEO Schools to enter all borough events ran by the Sutton Sports Partnership, as well as actively looking for further sporting opportunities out of the Borough and ran by outside organisations such as The Brownlee Foundation, Chelsea FC, Crystal Palace FC, Nomads Korfball, Connellen Cricket and Panathlon competitions. Football has a large focus in LEO Schools where we compete in the Sutton Schools FA league and cup fixtures at Sutton United FC, and entering County and National Competitions.
To complement these sporting fixtures and events we run our own LEO friendlies and festivals to promote participation and give all pupils of LEO the opportunity to represent their school. We believe in promoting the sporting values of fairness, integrity, responsibility and respect as well as developing and nurturing a love for sport and physical activity. During their time at LEO Schools, pupils develop the skills needed to play a comprehensive range of sports to a high standard.
