Pupils with special educational needs and disabilities at LEO Academy Trust are enjoying some quality time with a lovable team of therapy dogs, thanks to a unique initiative. ‘Wellbeing Woofers’, part of Rowan Perkin Ltd, supports children with learning challenges to build key social skills through playing and caring for trained dogs.

Creating an inclusive learning environment where all pupils can realise their full potential is at the heart of LEO Academy Trust. With numerous studies highlighting the benefits of therapy dogs for children with additional needs, the Trust has partnered with Wellbeing Woofers to help boost pupils’ personal development and overall wellbeing.

The Wellbeing Woofers’ team is currently formed of four talented and hypoallergenic dogs, including Charlie the Labradoodle and Molly, who loves long runs and curling up on the sofa for cuddles.

The initiative gives pupils the chance to play games with the friendly pups and learn how to groom and take care of them, in a safe and supervised environment. Pupils are encouraged to have fun and express emotions such as love and trust as they build a bond with their canine companion, emotions which can be challenging for some children with SEND to convey.

The scheme has been a resounding success for LEO pupils, helping to stimulate their cognitive abilities, promote self-esteem, teach compassion and respect and encourage outdoor activity.

LEO Academy Trust is currently the only Trust in the area who has each of its schools involved in the Wellbeing Woofers initiative. Research has proved that petting a dog releases happy hormones in your brain, so if your children are having a difficult day, spending 10 minutes with a dog can boost their mood greatly.

Danielle Scrase, executive principal at LEO Academy Trust, said:
“At LEO, we're committed to providing high-quality provision and support for our children with SEND. Our LEO Pupil Wellbeing Policy and Provision is based on Trauma-informed practice, and therapy dogs are often used as an intervention to provide opportunities for children to heal after trauma. We are therefore delighted to be working with Wellbeing Woofers. By introducing the team of therapy dogs, we are aiming to reduce anxiety for our children with additional learning challenges and help build their confidence, so they can thrive as happier and more engaged learners.”
