Expanding Global Horizons: Inside LEO Academy Trust’s Transformative Visit to Helsinki
Back to News & Blogs
We are thrilled to share the success of our recent educational visit to Helsinki, Finland, marking the second international trip of our 2026/27 academic year.
Supported by funding from the Turing Scheme, this memorable experience underlines our commitment to providing world-class, equity-focused educational opportunities. At LEO Academy Trust, we believe in the power of global connection and this trip provided a remarkable opportunity to broaden the horisons of pupils and staff alike.
A Thriving Three-Year Partnership
This visit marks the latest milestone in a thriving three-year international collaboration between LEO Academy Trust and Siltamäki Primary School in Helsinki. Throughout this partnership educators and young learners across both ecosystems have continually exchanged pedagogical insights, digital best practice and rich cultural perspectives. Visiting Helsinki in person allowed our pupils to experience this collaboration first-hand, deepening the bonds between our school communities.
Highlights from Our Week in Finland
Immersion in World-Leading Education
Our pupils fully immersed themselves in the Finnish education system joining Grade 4, 5, and 6 classes at Siltamäki Primary School. Working side by side with their Finnish peers they participated in daily lessons, collaborated on team projects and contributed to joint presentations and whole-school assemblies. It was wonderful to see our pupils integrate so naturally and build meaningful connections with their international peers.
Cultural and Sporting Exchange
Learning extends well beyond the classroom walls and our pupils enthusiastically embraced Finnish cultural and sporting traditions. During PE lessons they learnt the fast-paced game of floorball and mastered traditional Finnish folk dances. The excitement reached a peak when the group attended an electric local ice hockey derby, watching Jokerit take on HIFK at the Veikkaus Arena — an unforgettable highlight of the week.
Connecting with Nature and Well-Being
In true Nordic fashion, the team embraced the Finnish ethos of outdoor learning and well-being. Pupils enjoyed a traditional smoke sauna and nature experience at the picturesque Lake Kuusijärvi. The itinerary also included visits to several of Helsinki’s most iconic landmarks, including Senate Square, the extraordinary Temppeliaukio Church (the Rock Church) and the Allas Sea Pools.
A Special Thank You
International partnerships of this calibre do not happen by accident. They require shared vision, dedication and a significant amount of coordination and hard work.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated leaders and staff across both LEO Academy Trust and Siltamäki Primary School, led by their inspirational Principal, Anna-Mari Jaatinen. Our shared commitment to global citizenship continues to produce transformative experiences that enrich staff practice and ignite potential in our young learners.
Here’s to continuing our journey of international connection, educational excellence and shared innovation!
