Assistive Technology

At LEO Academy Trust, we believe in inclusive education for all children, where every learner thrives. We embrace Universal Design for Learning (UDL) as a foundation, ensuring equal access and participation for children of all abilities. Assistive technology (AT) serves as a crucial tool in removing barriers and empowering all children , including children with SEND to reach their full potential.

UDL principles guide our instruction, but for children with SEND, targeted AT acts as a customised bridge, removing individual barriers and amplifying learning opportunities.

Our dedicated class teachers actively collaborate with the SENDCo to identify individual needs and implement effective AT solutions. This collaborative process starts with a thorough forensic assessment of each child's strengths and challenges, leading to the selection of relevant AT tools, including the use of Artificial Intelligence.

Class teachers embed AT seamlessly into instruction:

  • Demonstrate and explicitly teach students how to use AT effectively in various learning contexts.

  • Design lessons in small, scaffolded steps that leverage the full potential of their chosen AT tools.

  • Provide ongoing reminders and encouragement to help students build confidence and independence with their AT.

  • Continuously assess the effectiveness of AT use and adjust support as needed.

LEO Academy Trust invests in training staff and SEND specialists to stay up-to-date on the latest AT advancements and best practices.
